Data Matrix vs QR vs GS1: which code do you need?

Data Matrix (DMC), QR and GS1-128 look interchangeable but solve different problems. Pick the wrong one and your scanners, ERP or regulator will reject it.

    Data Matrix (ECC 200)

The industrial default. Readable down to ~2×2 mm, error-corrected via Reed–Solomon (ECC 200), survives etching, laser marking and rough handling. Required by VDA 5006 (automotive) and used across GS1 pharma serialization.

    QR Code

Higher data capacity, designed for camera phones and consumer scanning. Fine for marketing, WiFi handoff, vCards. Not the right choice for small part marking or regulated traceability.

    GS1-128 / EAN-13

Linear barcodes for logistics and retail. GS1-128 encodes GS1 Application Identifiers (GTIN, batch, expiry). EAN-13 is the retail scanner standard. Use them where the wider carton or shelf makes 1D acceptable.

    What is ECC 200?

ECC 200 is the current Data Matrix specification (ISO/IEC 16022). It uses Reed–Solomon error correction so a code can be partially damaged, whether scratched, corroded or laser-marked over cast metal, and still decode reliably. Every code this generator produces is ECC 200. Older ECC 000 to 140 variants are obsolete and are not supported.

    VDA 5006: automotive part marking

VDA 5006 is the German automotive standard for Direct Part Marking (DPM) with Data Matrix. It defines minimum module size, contrast, quiet zone and grading (ISO/IEC 15415/29158) so a Tier‑2 supplier's mark still reads at an OEM's inbound line. If you supply into VW, BMW, Mercedes or their tiers, your DMC must meet VDA 5006 grade B or better.

    GS1 pharma serialization

The EU Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) and the US DSCSA both require a serialized 2D Data Matrix on every saleable pharmaceutical unit. The code carries a GS1 GTIN (AI 01), serial number (AI 21), batch (AI 10) and expiry (AI 17), separated by GS1 FNC1. This tool generates the raw DMC, and you still need a GS1 company prefix and a serial-number source to be compliant.

You marked it, now inspect it

Inspect the parts you just marked, with an iPhone

A Data Matrix proves what a part is. Enao Vision proves whether it's good. Point an iPhone at the line and get automated visual inspection, with no PLC integration, no industrial cameras and no signup.
