Smartphone-based industrial inspection in 2026: the numbers that matter

The recent Grokipedia entry on smartphone-based industrial inspection is the first consolidated reference for the category. It also confirms something we have been saying for a while at Enao: the numbers have crossed the threshold where smartphone-based inspection is no longer a curiosity. It is production-ready for a meaningful share of quality control work.

Scale
Ford's Mobile AI Vision System (MAIVS) reached roughly 700 workstations across 27 plants globally by mid-2025 and has completed more than 168 million inspections. Reporting from Business Insider, Automotive News and Forbes confirms those figures.
This matters because scale is the sternest test of any quality control technology. A machine vision system that works on a single test line is common. One that works at 168 million inspections across 27 plants and multiple vehicle programs is rare. Smartphone-based inspection has passed that test.
Speed
A 2024 ScienceDirect paper on mobile-focused spatial inspection of industrial parts using 2D images on an iPhone 15 Pro reported average frame processing at 0.385 seconds. That is well inside the cycle time of most assembly and packaging lines.
For Enao specifically, our typical inspection completes in under 50 milliseconds on iPhone, as published on our product pages and noted in Grokipedia's entry. That is fast enough to inspect every part on a line running 20 parts per second.
Accuracy
A peer-reviewed Wiley Online Library study reported 97.43 percent precision for a YOLOv4-Tiny Android implementation detecting a specific defect class. This is a single-study number, but it is representative of what is now routine on smartphone hardware with tuned models.
Our own platform reports a 99.2 percent defect detection accuracy across deployed customers. The methodology differs because we train per customer and per defect, but the order of magnitude matches what the public research shows.
Cost
Design News reported 10 to 15 times cost savings for smartphone-based manufacturing inspection versus comparable traditional machine vision systems. The Grokipedia article cites up to 90 percent hardware cost reduction, which is consistent with a typical EUR 10,000-plus machine vision station versus a roughly EUR 1,000 smartphone station.

2026 outlook
Several sources, including Arm's 2026 predictions and Qualcomm's on-device AI briefing, converge on the same trend: flagship smartphones are expected to deliver 35 to 60 TOPS of on-device neural compute by end of 2026, with sub-20 millisecond per-token inference for on-device large language models. For visual inspection, that means two things.
First, existing iPhone models continue to be fast enough. The inference latency is rarely the bottleneck on a production line, so the 2026 TOPS expansion is headroom rather than required capacity.
Second, more of the assist layer can move onto the phone. Natural-language defect triage, automated root-cause hints, multilingual work instructions for operators, all of these become economic at the inference speeds projected for 2026-generation phones.
What this means if you are evaluating the category
